Now I am trying to figure out how to get the application onto an external HD/DVD so I can 'Deep Defrag' the drive rather than the easy version. It appeared that the individual files are not fragmented but the drive is not 'organized' for best speed making even larger HD machines more prone IMO.ĭefinitely worth the $29 investment for anyone that is responsible for maintaining Macs in the company (or personal) environment. The optimize option took about 10 minutes on my 320GB drive. I would now concur that large drives and large files would benefit from this activity even at scheduled periodic maintenance. The local Mac Tech mentioned that he has proved this, causing much disagreement with most Mac lovers. On the local Mac forum there was a spirited debate about OS X and the supposed no need to defrag any disk. It has restored much of the speed I was missing that I had expected via TM. iDefrag 1.1.3: defragmentation and disk optimization.In this release, the main display now uses OpenGL rather than Quartz which makes it much faster.

So I bought iDefrag and just quickly 'speed' optimized the HD.

This AM I investigated further using iDefrag ( ) and could see the drive is in fact fragmented still lending theory to the sector by sector copy - it seems to have restored a fragmented disk image. iDefrag is simply one of the recommended Mac defrag. Chances are you are increasing files that are fragmented in the hard disk and even degrading the performance of Mac system. Everything works just fine but it seemed to not have the speed bump I expected even though the drive was erased prior to the reinstall via TM. This is quite true if your one of the Mac users that constantly run security updates replaces operating systems components and creates and deletes large files. On completion of the restore a restart and back to exactly where it was prior to first TM backup. It seemed to be a sector by sector copy (both ways) based on the speed (multiple hours).

I then used my Retail OS disk and did an erase and install followed by a full restore from my Time Machine backup - there is this option under Utilities (why do I not see TM option before?). I used a firewire cabled 500GB External and it did everything without any issue albeit very slow I thought. Yesterday I used Time Machine to make a full backup of my Aluminum iMac. Update on my Holiday task - refreshing my Aluminum iMac - OS 10.5.8
